In 1928, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming made one of the most significant discoveries in the history of medicine: penicillin. Fleming noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum had contaminated one of his petri dishes, inhibiting the growth of bacteria around it. This observation led him to conclude that the mold produced a substance that killed bacteria. Fleming named this substance "penicillin" and recognized its potential as an antibiotic.
